General Information

Hermanus is situated in the heart of the Whale Route, just 100km from Cape Town on the Cape Whale Coast of the Western Cape in South Africa.   Hermanus has developed from a rustic fishing village into one of the world’s best whale-viewing sites.  An appealing place to kick back and watch the ocean titans as they cruise close to shore, seemingly without a care.  Their yearly visit is celebrated with The Whale Festival - a truly spectacular event, and great for families.

Hermanus offers visitors magnificent scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, upmarket shops and endless adventure.  Visitors from near and far flock to the town to enjoy its many charms while local residents and homeowners savour the privilege of living in this unique region.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve with over 1600 identified species of indigenous fynbos offers breathtaking hikes, a mountain bike trail and a short wheel chair accessible path.  There are many little animals found in the reserve e.g. Porcupines, baboon and small buck as well as over 92 species of birds.  Every year there is the Hermanus Flower Festival held here for all to view the spectacular nature displays.

Other outdoor activities include cycling, kayaking, paragliding, scenic chartered plane flights, paintball, horse riding, quad biking, golf, fly fishing, tree top sliding, scuba diving, canoe river trips, canopy tours, quad biking and horse riding. Hermanus also has facilities for tennis, squash, bowls and fishing.

Southern Right whales visit Walker Bay from June to December and visitors to the area can view them from either out on a boat, from an airplane or even from the shore. Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Crier who blows his kelp horn when whales are spotted along the coast.

Savour endless walks on the pristine Grotto Beach with white sand as far as the eye can see.
